The interpreter listens to a section of speech in source language and takes notes in a conference room. When the speaker finishes or stops, the interpreter relays the information accurately and completely with clear and natural target language, just as if he were making a speech.

Consecutive interpreters are required to interpret the content completely and accurately after listening to a 5-10 minute speech, and express it with good presentation skills.

Consecutive interpretation is mostly used in small meetings involving only two languages, such as diplomatic meetings, bilateral negotiations, visits and investigations, small-scale consultations, interviews, judicial and quasi-judicial proceedings, banquet speeches, press conferences, and small Seminars, etc.

In consecutive interpretation, when the speaker finishes a sentence, a sense group, a paragraph or even an entire article, the interpreter translates what he said into the target language. During the two Sessions, consecutive interpretation is applied in all press conferences. Different from simultaneous interpretation, interpreters meet the listeners directly, so they receive more attention and more psychological pressure. Besides, there are breaks for interpreters to understand the overall meaning of the speech (sentence, sense group, paragraph or article) and organize the translation structure, so the quality of translation is usually higher. In view of these two points, consecutive interpretation is more difficult than simultaneous interpretation, and it can better reflect the level of the interpreter.

On any occasion, such as formal negotiations, courtesy meetings, press conferences, visits, tours, banquets, opening ceremonies or telephone conversations, the following must be done well:

1. An effective note-taking system.

2. A sound psychological quality.

3. Well preparation and full understanding of the gist and purpose of the conference and technical terms involved in order to do the interpretation with ease.

There are different interpretation methods and styles on different occasions.

1. Formal negotiations, press conferences and opening ceremonies are serious and solemn activities, translation should be clear, steady and accurate, with a moderate speed.

2. Ceremonial meetings involve no substantive issues, generally based on greetings and communications, so interpreters should only pass friendly messages to maintain the harmony created by both the host and the guest.

3. In banquets, except for toast at the beginning or the end, people generally communicate in a casual way, so the translation can be plain, interspersing the meal with easygoing conversations.

4. When visiting, interpreters need to focus on key points, then summarize and pass the information, and the speed of the translation can be slightly faster.

5. In telephone interpretation, it is hard for interpreters to understand the meaning of the speaker due to the lack of eye contact. Therefore, interpreters should be highly focused on listening, and take notes at the same time. And the speaking speed should be slowed down properly to ensure that the listeners receive the information accurately.

Consecutive interpretation should be instant, flexible and clever, so as to highlight the immediacy and make the translation pleasing and interesting.
